Palpitations - What Are They?

What are Palpitations?

Palpitations are the sensation of an irregular, fast, or strong heartbeat that you can feel in your chest, throat, or neck. It can feel like your heart is pounding, fluttering, or racing. While often harmless, palpitations can sometimes be a sign of an underlying health issue, particularly if they are frequent, prolonged, or accompanied by other symptoms. Symptoms can include:
• physical sensation in your chest;
• brief period of breathlessness or lightheadedness; and,
• anxiety.

Causes of Palpitations

Palpitations can be triggered by a variety of factors, including:
Physical activity: Exercise or physical exertion can cause your heart rate to increase temporarily.
Emotional stress: Anxiety, stress, or panic attacks can cause a racing heart.
Caffeine or stimulants: Coffee, energy drinks, or certain medications may lead to palpitations.
Hormonal changes: Pregnancy, menopause, or thyroid issues can influence your heart rhythm.
Heart conditions: Arrhythmias, heart disease, or other cardiovascular issues might also cause palpitations.
Dehydration or anaemia: Low blood pressure or low iron levels can lead to a faster heart rate.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Although palpitations are often harmless, you should seek medical advice if:
• The palpitations are frequent or happen suddenly.
• They are accompanied by dizziness, chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting.
• There’s a known history of heart disease or arrhythmias.
• The palpitations happen without an obvious cause (like exercise or stress).
